Quantum Technology : Single - Photon Source

This report is a synthesis of my master thesis internship at the National Institute of Informatics in Tokyo that last during the summer of year 2012. I worked in the Quantum Information Science Theory (QIST) group under supervision of Prof. Kae Nemoto and Dr. Simon Devitt. The group works on theoretical and experimental implementations of quantum information science. The aim of my project was to study and improve quantum optical systems. I first studied different fields and systems of quantum information science. Then I focused my research on single-photon sources, entangled photon sources and interferometric photonic switches. Finally, some strategies had to be found to design an efficient and optimized single-photon source that could be built with today’s technologies. This report describes in details the created and optimized design of a single-photon source based on Spontaneous Parametric Downcoversion (SPDC).

Coherent Transport of Single Photon in a Quantum Super-cavity with Mirrors Composed of Λ-Type Three-level Atomic Ensembles
In this paper, we study the coherent transport of single photon in a coupled resonator waveguide (CRW) where two threelevel Λ-type atomic ensembles are embedded in two separate cavities. We show that it is possible to control the photon transmission and reflection coefficients by using classical control fields. In particular, we find that the total photon transmission and reflection are achieva...

Electroluminescence from a single quantum dot within the intrinsic region of a p-i-n junction is shown to act as an electrically driven single-photon source. At low injection currents, the dot electroluminescence spectrum reveals a single sharp line due to exciton recombination, while another line due to the biexciton emerges at higher currents. The second-order correlation function of the diod...
Application of quantum technology in radars
In this paper, the use of quantum technology in the radar system and the advantages of these radars as compared to classical radars have been analyzed. In the beginning, briefly, we present the basic structure of the theory of quantum electrodynamics, and then the role of photon in this theory and photon interactions is presented. In the next step, the most general form of the quantum radar cr...

We analyze the quantitative improvement in performance provided by a novel quantum key distribution (qkd) system that employs a correlated photon source (cps) and a photon-number resolving detector (pnr). Our calculations suggest that given current technology, the cps/pnr implementation offers an improvement of several orders of magnitude in secure bit rate over previously described implementat...
Quantum state tomography of a fiber-based source of polarization-entangled photon pairs.
We report an experimental demonstration of a bright high-fidelity single-mode-optical-fiber source of polarization-entangled photon pairs. The source takes advantage of single-mode fiber optics, highly nonlinear microstructure fiber, judicious phase-matching, and the inherent stability provided by a Sagnac interferometer. With a modest average pump power (300 microW), we create all four Bell st...
